I know a lot of you out there know Bill Grant of the Roanoke Valley Bird Club,
either through his work as our Vice President of Programs or maybe from the
hawkwatch at Harvey's Knob. Sadly, he passed away unexpectedly this week of a
massive heart attack. A couple of weeks ago he had a smaller heart attack that
landed him in the hospital. When he passed out, he fell and hit his head, and
we'd heard there was more concern over that injury than there was over his
heart. He was in and out of ICU since then, and although the last report we
had was that he seemed to be improving, we lost him early Wednesday morning.
There will be a memorial service at Glenvar High School in Salem (where he
taught music for many years) on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. You can get more
information and read about his life at the Simpson Funeral Home website at

Incidentally, the RVBC could use your help. If Bill had you scheduled to be a
speaker at one of our upcoming club meetings, could you let me know? Someone
will have to step in and finish up the year for him as VP of Programs, and we
have no idea if he already had speakers lined up.
