Hello Friends,
We are asking for volunteers who could assist us in the first ever BioBlitz at
George Washington Birthplace National Monument. We are looking for
identification experts, professional or lay, who could lead field teams. We are
also looking for assistants who can fill out these field teams. If you or
someone you know are interested and could come, please contact Fawn Palmer or
Rijk Morawe. Thanks so very much. :-)

Volunteers are needed for a BioBlitz at George Washington Birthplace National
Monument. Located on Pope's Creek and the lower Potomac River, GEWA 550 acres
of varied habitats--upland forest, meadow, freshwater riparian, tide-flushed
brackish marsh, and beach.
This first-ever event will be conducted over three days--Friday, September
12th, Saturday,Sept. 13th and Sunday, Sept. 14 th .
Adults, families (adults with youth) and community groups
(adults w/ youth) are invited to participate. Please contact
Fawn Palmer to volunteer or for more information. GEWA #804-224-1732 or cell
#540-760-2511 or email: Fawn_Palmer@xxxxxxx .
This BioBlitz at George Washington Birthplace is being coordinated and
sponsored by the National Park Service and the Northern Neck Master Naturalists
. Linda Fabre of the Northeast and Coastal Barrier Network, NPS Data
Coordinator, Univ. of Rhode Island will be present to provide instruction on
using data collection protocols.
Volunteers are needed who can lead or assist in field identification teams.
Teams will optimally be composed of a leader, a data recorder, a digital
photographer and at least one observer-identifier. Orientation,
supplies, equipment and training will be provided on-site, day-of.
Experts, lay or professional, are especially sought to be team leaders.
Inventories will be conducted on all park-administered lands
including forests, grasslands, beaches, marshes and waters.
Species targeted include, but are not limited to: plants, moulds, fungi,
mosses, algae, insects, arachnids, fresh water and marine
organisms, mammals including bats, birds, reptiles and amphibians.
George Washington Birthplace National Monument , National Park Service, has
serious data gaps in numerous phylums represented within the park boundaries
and neighboring waters and marshes. Although there is decent information within
birds, fish, and plants, additional and supporting information is always
valuable and important. A bio-blitz will provide supporting and new information
about presence, relative ecosystem health and diversity of this small National
Park resource. The data will support that which has already been collected and
be added to our growing database. The data is used for park planning,
preservation and conservation, proposal planning for restoration and
management, and managing exotic species. Data collected is used by various
Interpreters who use the information within the context of presenting
information to visitors, used by researchers, and may be used, if compete
enough, to generate species lists to be shared by visitors and school groups.

A typical day might begin at approximately 1/2 hour before sunrise and
continue, for certain genera (Chiroptera and Lepidoptera) well into the night.
A volunteer could stay as long as they wish. Those experienced in nocturnal
species might not arrive till just before sunset and might remain till after
midnight.
The BioBlitz will be headquartered out of the Historic Log House facility which
has a large, eighteenth-century style meeting hall, cloakroom/parlor, full
kitchen and full bath. There will be a small, non-public use area that can be
used primitive camping. For those who would like to stay on a regular camping
site, need hook-ups or would like to stay in the comfort of a modernized cabin,
Westmoreland State Park is only seven miles away.
