Apparently either a bird flying very late or very early (or perhaps a bat) was
in our suburban yard last night or this morning. We found the rear wings of an
Imperial Moth (Eacles imperialis) in the front yard. Floating in our little
bog garden in the backyard were the tattered rear wings of either a Promethea
moth, Callosamia promethea, or a Tulip-Tree Silkmoth, Callosamia angulifera.
Although we searched, we found no forewings and no other remains of any kind.
Our yard is completely surrounded by other yards, and the nearest park is about
a mile away (less for those with wings).
Any idea if the predator was a bat? If not, what bird would be preying on the
giant silk moths, which are primarily active at night?
