I had a very nice morning at Occoquan NWR. Many of the highlights occured
within view of the parking lot. I camped out by the trail intersection
just south of the parking lot (where Marc Ribaudo had reported a Sedge Wren
last week). No Sedge Wren but many other good birds. I found 1 Lincoln's
Sparrow, (I ran into Ron Vogel -- he had two others), Orange Crowned
Warbler, and a singing Blue Headed Vireo, palm and yellow rumped
warblers. Swamp, field, song, white throated sparrows in addition to the
Lincoln's.
A Merlin buzzed through at a high rate of speed.
I walked down to where the beavers had been. There is an Eagles nest in a
large Sycamore tree. It was occupied by two adult eagles. A third Adult
eagle came in and there was quite a fight/chase.
I doubled back and went down easy road. I stopped for about 45 minutes and
listened for rails at the marsh. I lucked out. I was able to hear 4
distinct king rails and caught one on video.
Heading back to the parking lot I was able to find a beautiful Tennessee
warbler. It had white undertail coverts. The Orange Crowned I was earlier
was quite different. The orange crowned had a grey head and yellow
undertail coverts.
5 warbler species overall: Tennessee, Orange Crowned, yellow rumped, palm,
and Common Yellow Throat.
