This morning I had an interesting mixture of birds at the feeders in
front of the house. Wintering birds like White-throated Sparrow and
Dark-eyed Junco are present, but their numbers are decreasing. To our
delight four Purple Finches showed up, three of them were males.
American Goldfinches are busy molting and the Pine Siskins (6 while I
was working in the garden) are getting brighter as well. A single
Golden-crowned Kinglet was seen. First of season birds included
Northern-Rough Winged Swallow (5), Purple Martin (1), Blue-Grey
Gnatcatcher (1) and Brown Thrasher (2). A single male Eastern Towhee
was happily foraging in the leave litter as well but he has been hanging
out for the past few weeks.
