Greetings,
I finally got my life Black Bear, at Cedar Run Wetlands (private) in
Nokesville, Prince William County this morning. It was an awesome sight to see
the
young male bear (70 to 80 lbs.) loping across the water filled impoundment.
When
I first saw him I thought it was a black Lab running loose, but the binocs
told me otherwise. Once across the imoundment, the bear scampered off into the
woods, headed in the Quantico direction.
Recent sightings at the wetlands include juvenile Blue-winged Teal and a juv.
and adult Least Bittern. Perhaps both species bred there? On 7/6, I found the
young bittern staring at me while he was perched on a cattail. I had been
keeping an eye on the teal since late May, hoping they would breed there. On
5/27, I saw a male BW Teal constantly chasing off 2 other male teal, with a
female
teal nearby. On 6/12, I saw one male, but no female. On 7/6, I encountered
six BW Teal, possibly juveniles, and they didn't flush when I was within 15 to
20 feet of them. Unable to fly yet? Four teal were seen on 7/9 and this time
they flew!
That Black Bear was my favorite sighting!
