VA-Birders,
Late this afternoon, I hit a couple of spots along the Potomac River. On my
way to Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary (Arlington Co.), I decided to stop off
at the Lyndon B Johnson Memorial Grove to see what might be there. Present
were over a dozen HOODED MERGS, MALLARDS, a GREAT-BLACK-BACKED GULL, and other
typical winter gulls. Perched on a post near the boat marina was a very nice
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, a difficult January bird for northern Virginia.
Knowing it is considered a DC bird while sitting over the water, I waited it
out to see if it would fly 30 feet to VA to count as a VA bird. After 15
minutes, it flew over the trees toward the Pentagon parking lot, thus counting
as a VA bird.
In addition, a flock of 45 CANADA GEESE flew from the Potomac to the Pentagon
parking lot where I think they landed. Within them was a small goose that may
have been a CACKLING GOOSE, though my look was brief and not ideal, so it stays
a "regular" Canada as it may have been a lesser Canada.
I also visited Roaches Run and found 4 of the PIED-BILLED GREBES that are
usually present, and some common ducks.
Take Care,
Jay Keller,
Arlington
