I'm sorry I couldn't send this earlier this afternoon (but no cell phone
service for me in the area). I saw this Black-throated Gray Warbler on
Arrowhead Rd (Route 670) off Stonewall Rd (route 608) just north of Concord in
Appomattox County about 1:30 this afternoon (VARCOM submission being prepared).
It was an active gray warbler with wing bars and an unmistakable black and
white head pattern, clearly not a black and white (nor a blackpoll if it had
been spring). I was birding with Peggy Lyons and Jim Elder. Peggy never got her
binocs on the bird but Jim got a quick look at it before it disappeared into
the woods. Jim aptly described the head pattern as similar to a White-crowned
Sparrow. It was feeding with a small flock of chickadees, kinglets, and a
Blue-headed Vireo.
We had been birding since early morning in Campbell and Appomattox Counties.
Thelma Dalmas spent most of the morning with us but had to leave early. We saw
a few other mixed feeding flocks including a several more kinglets, a Magnolia,
lots of Yellow-rumps, Pines, lots of Palms, and a Hooded Warbler. The only
other notable sightings were two Yellow-billed Cuckoos and a large flock (100+)
Brown-headed Cowbirds near a dairy farm.
