Update and pictures - Tuesday, December 30, 2003
Location: Blandy Experimental Farm (State Arboretum of Virginia) located on
Rt. 50, approximately 7 miles east of Winchester, VA
Below is link to web page with few pictures of the Black-throated Gray
Warbler taken Tuesday, December 30, 2003.
Arrived by 11:30 a.m. and ran into Tom Pendleton. Warbler had been
observed by others around 10 a.m. for approximately 20 minutes, actively
feeding in the same area short distance from pavilion. (Note: Cold front
had pushed through with bright blue sky and very breezy in the morning. By
2 p.m. wind had diminished and air temperature was around 48 degrees.)
Several individuals arrived who had observed the warbler previous day
actively feeding around 2 p.m. We stuck around and sure enough, at 2:02
p.m., the warbler flew into one of the Tabletop Pines and began actively
feeding, behaving more like a nuthatch. Between 2:02 p.m. and 2:48 p.m. it
was observed feeding in the Tabletop Pine, occasionally flying to
bittersweet and into Juniper and back into the Tabletop Pine. Several
individuals were on hand, including Doug Poffenbarger who first discovered
the warbler on December 27.
