Salutations!
During the past week, I have been monitoring the influx of Bobolinks in a hay
field near my home in the Little Patrick/Horseshoe Loop area of Amelia. On
Monday, Apr. 27, two flew over the hood of my car. Yesterday I was able to
observe 5, and hear more. This morning, 12 were visible in the field and on
the fences, and more were heard in the field. As of 6:00 this evening, none
were observed, but many were heard as they had moved farther into the field.
In the past, they have stayed for about a week, so I imagine they'll be heading
out soon. They share the field with Eastern Meadowlarks, Barn Swallows, and
Grasshopper Sparrows. There is quite an energetic quality to the birdsong in
the area!
If anyone is interested in checking out the Bobolinks tomorrow (Sunday, May 3),
you are welcome to park in my driveway, and Patty Elton and I will be happy to
take you to the field around 2 pm. The road is narrow, with barbed wire fence
on both sides, so pulling off is difficult. We are planning a Bobolink
Celebration at 2:00, and would welcome your company. You can contact me
directly if you would like directions and information. The celebration will go
on even if the Bobolinks leave. There are plenty of other good birds on the
Loop, including FOS Bob White this evening!
