Eleven participants enjoyed a fine morning during the Sunday Bird Walk at
Newport News Park. Highlight for me was a soaring Broad-winged Hawk,and other
notables included wintering birds such as Brown Creeper, Yellow-Bellied
Sapsucker, and singing Winter Wren. A Common Loon flew over, a Great Horned
Owl was seen in flight, and spring arrivals included numerous Blue-Gray
Gnatcatchers and a male Purple Martin. Waterfowl diversity and numbers were
down on the Reservoir; there were quite a few Wood Ducks back in the swamp, a
few Hooded Mergansers around as well as a single American Wigeon and
Red-Breasted Merganser.
