Jeff Blalock and I had a nice morning birding Staunton View Park along the
borders of Halifax, Mecklenburg, and Charlotte Counties. The lake level is
down to 298' exposing the most mudflats that we've seen in a couple years.
Consequently a few good birds were around. Hightlights were both a
BUFF-BREASTED and a BAIRD'S Sandpiper foraging in the grassy area in the
center of the flat straight out from the parking area. Other shorebirds
included Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plovers, Killdeer, Sanderling,
Least, Semipalmated, Spotted, Solitary, and Pectoral Sandpipers, and Greater
and Lesser Yellowlegs. Terns included FORSTER'S, Caspian, and Black.
Waders included Great-blue, Little-blue, and Green Herons and Great Egrets.
No Ibis today.
