More than a dozen great blue herons are busy making babies at Burke Lake Park.
I managed to grab some photos tonight of a some herons flying sticks into their
nests on the island across from the marina. There are roughly 2 dozen nests. I
don't know of any other heron nests you can get closer to in northern Virginia.
If you do, please let me know! They share the island with an eagles' nest,
which is reportedly occupied. Also there today: a couple dozen scaups and
ring-necked ducks, a pair of hooded mergansers, and hundreds of double-crested
cormorants.
