An editorial in The Daily Press today states that CBBT Island #1 "the closest
one to the bridge-tunnel's south end, will be shut down by the end of the
month. And it's not going to reopen. ... Part of that pleasure has been pulling
off at the first island to enjoy the view and grab a bite at the grill. By the
end of the month, you won't be able to do that any longer."
Apparently I missed something in earlier publicity about this tunnel expansion
project as I did not understand that Island #1 would never reopen. If this is
correct, this is a real blow to birders who can only stop at island to bird the
CBBT. I had heard that CBBT will continue to escort groups of birders to
islands where construction would not interfere with birding throughout this
project. It sounds like birding the CBBT will be seriously impacted by this
construction. Does anyone have more reliable information on individual access
to island 1 after construction is completed? Or what group access to all
islands will be like during and after construction?
