I was over on the water intake platform on the C&O Canal at Great Falls from
about 4:30 to 5:15 today. There was one adult and one very large chick on the
eagle nest on the south end of Conn Island.
As I was leaving there was another adult Bald Eagle soaring over the river
and over the water intake platform.
There was also a very large number of Purple Martins, Chimney Swifts, Tree
Swallows, and some Rough-wing swallows flying and feeding everywhere: in
parking lot, zipping through the trees, over the canal and the water-intake
platform, and high and low over the river.
There was apparently some kind of an insect hatch and the birds were taking
full advantage of the food.
As I was driving from Virginia into Maryland across the American Legion
Bridge, a raptor took off from the trees on the side of the road, flew over the
bridge and up river. It appeared to be a Peregrine Falcon. I didn't get a
really good look because the traffic was terrible, but I think it was a
Peregrine.
