Phil,
This is interesting because when I was there about an hour
earlier there almost three times as many nighthawks. When I was leaving at
9:45 pm the birds were moving higher and were harder to see. I have noticed
this behavior in the past.
At my regular watchsite at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax City I had one
group of 16 Common Nighthawks tonight
(8-19). Numerically migration is ahead of last year-47 birds this year
compared to none last year). I saw my first nighthawk in 2002 on August 20.

I counted seven Common Nighthawks and heard one for a total of eight,
tonight August 19, 2003, between 10 p.m. and 10:30, at the white pyramid
office building at the intersection of Gallows Road and Boone Boulevard
in Tysons Corner, VA. There were also a few bats flying around, too.
