On September 21, 2003, Bob Anderson, hawk identification expert, long-time
volunteer at the Kiptopeke Hawkwatch, member of Coastal Virginia Wildlife
Observatory's Board of Directors and Chairman of its Raptor Research Team,
will
conduct a workshop on identification of hawks in flight. Also on hand to help
out
will be Kiptopeke Hawkwatch Coordinator Jennifer Ottinger. The nearby hawk
banding station will do its best to provide birds-in-the-hand as well.
There will be great information for hawk watchers at any level of experience.
It is around this date that many of the spectacular Merlin flights have
occurred there. All of the regularly occurring species are expected, except for
Golden Eagle, Northern Goshawk and Rough-legged Hawk, which are later migrants.
It is an excellent time to find the rare, but regular visitor, Swainson's Hawk.
Participants will meet at the Kiptopeke State Park Hawkwatch platform at 10
a.m. The workshop will conclude at 2 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring
binoculars, scopes, field guides and a bag lunch. There is no fee for the
workshop, however, the Park charges for parking.
