Thanks to donations from 28 fine and generous photographers, Coastal
Virginia Wildlife Observatory is happy to announce that the "Rarities" photo CD
is
completed. A DVD version is also being made for those who prefer that format.
There are more than 250 color images of almost 100 species of rarely seen
and rarely captured birds, all from around the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Many
close-ups were made by CVWO Songbird Bander Jethro Runco of unusual birds in
the hand, like Chuck-will's-widow, Virginia Rail, Bicknell's Thrush, Cerulean
Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker and the spectacular white-plumaged Prairie
Warbler he caught at Kiptopeke last fall. There are also pictures of such
mega-rarities as Black-tailed Gull, Heerman's Gull, Razorbill, Little Egret,
Fulvous
Whistling Duck, Gray Kingbird, Mountain Bluebird, Ash-throated Flycatcher,
Rock Wren, Black-chinned Hummingbird and Rufous Hummingbird. And of course,
Iceland Gull, Glaucous Gull, Western Tanager, Western Kingbird, Painted
Bunting,
Olive-sided Flycatcher, Swainson's Hawk and much more.
Many are very close-up head portraits, clearly showing key field marks, such
as eye lines, eye rings and other features. It's a fun visual experience and
a great learning tool. The photographer credits are given for each image.
The "Rarities" CD/DVD is a follow-up to the CVWO 10th Anniversary Photo CD
that was completed last year, which is still available as well. To order the
"Rarities" CD/DVD, which is $20 including postage, or to inquire about other
items (hats, binocular straps, t-shirts), please contact Merchandising
Coordinator Peggy Opengari at _gramby@pemtel.net_ (mailto:gramby@xxxxxxxxxx) .
They
are also for sale at the Kiptopeke Songbird Station and Hawkwatch.
All proceeds go toward field research programs conducted by CVWO and
educational materials that are produced and distributed by CVWO.
