Hi all,
Here is the most recent update on banding and migration on the Eastern
Shore. Most of the expected local breeders have made significant increases
in recent days sparked by last weeks warm weather. Orchard Orioles, Blue
Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings and Yellow-breasted Chats have arrived at their
usually haunts. A couple of Yellow-billed Cuckoos and Chuck-will's-widows
have been heard. The warmer weather also provided some entertaining if
modest hawk-watching days with steady movements of Merlins with the last few
American Kestrels throw into the mix along with a few Northern Harriers and
some of the first Broad-winged Hawks this spring. Hundreds of swallows
including the first Banks moved on the same warm air. Warbler movement on
the Shore is always a bit of chore to track although aided greatly by the
banding...note Worm-eating Warbler and Louisiana Waterthrush in the totals.
Shorebird migration has definitely picked up with 100s of Willets moving
through along with significant groupings of Yellowlegs, Black-bellied
Plovers, Short-billed Dowitchers and Whimbrel. The Sedge Wrens continue on
Ramp Lane supplemented with some recent arrivals of Marsh Wrens.
