For the last week or so, I've been hearing a chip call that I didn't recognize.
After a little observation, I confirmed what I was beginning to suspect, that
it is Northern Cardinals giving a very slow version (or individual sounds) of
its explosive "took" call, but without the higher pitches. I don't remember
hearing this before, but I've been out in the woods much more this year. This
chip/call seems to be made by both male and female. It also seems seasonal,
as I've not heard it earlier in the summer.
I'm curious if others have noticed and what thoughts you have about it. I just
read the Birds of the World description of cardinal vocalizations and don't see
any reference to this phenomenon.
