Greetings...
Four of us (Sue Heath, Laura Catterton, Little Jon, and myself) spent this
morning at Clifton Farm and Airlie, both private areas. We started this
morning at six-thirty, and wrapped up about ten-thirty. Sue had covered both
of these areas on Thursday morning without hearing a few of the following
birds.
The following are a few of the notables.
Common Loon, 3 overhead.
DC Cormorant, 15 or so at Airlie Reservoir, mostly adults (all except three).
Green Heron, 1.
Black Vulture, single young at a nest. An adorable (but stinky) little
thing.
Gadwall, 2 still hanging around.
Broad-winged Hawk, 4.
Wild Turkey, at least one gobbler.
Spotted Sandpiper, 2.
Chimney Swift, 1. Interesting to me is that I had my first swift on Monday,
and have only had a couple more since.
Eastern Kingbirds, lots in traditional areas.
White-eyed Vireo, 15 or so.
Warbling Vireo, 1. First-of-year for all of us.
Blue-headed Vireo, 5.
Red-eyed Vireo, 2.
RC "Big-eyed" Kinglet, many. Maybe 20. The majority of them were singing.
Their song is still hard to reconcile with that little beast.
Wood Thrush, 4. First-of-year for three of us.
Yellow Warbler, 3-4, new for all of us and not noted Thursday.
Prairie Warbler, 15 or so. In good numbers.
Black-and-white Warbler, 3.
Ovenbird, 4.
Louisiana Waterthrush, 2.
Common Yellowthroat, a whole bunch. 30 or so.
Yellow-breasted Chat, 1. Only one in an area that usually has a bunch.
First of year for all of us. This bird wasn't here Thursday.
Birds we were sort of expecting but didn't find were orioles. Orchards have
been reported a bit already from VA and MD, and the area we were in teems
with them in a week. While a tad early for Baltimore, again it is an area
where they breed in such numbers that I'm surprised there wasn't one around.
We also thought we would get a Blue-winged Warbler, but that wasn't to be
either.
Cheers...
Todd
