Location: Chincoteague NWR, 11:45 a.m. - ca. 4:00 p.m.
Observation date: 9/9/10
Notes: Marv Rubin found WCPI at 1:00 p.m. or so, and it stayed around the
normal spot until about 2:30. The bird was in a flock of mixed Anas (including
both Mallard and Blue-winged Teal showing leucism, present several days); it
eventually walked out of the water, and no bands were present on the legs. No
sign of the Garganey, but many birds had their heads submerged, feeding. Two
Peregrines worked the flock, but the young male seemed to be hunting Pectoral
Sandpipers rather than Blue-winged Teal, favored by the adult female.
Beautiful
day. Remarkable that Green-winged numbers have spiked, Blue-winged
dropped, just in
a few days. Are they moving to parts of the refuge not accessible to the public?
