While scouting this morning for the upcoming Newport News CBC on Dec. 19 I
found an imm. male Common Eider off the beach at Grandview Nature Park near the
rock pile. Also in the immdeiate vicinity was a female Common Goldeneye. Only
Scoters I saw here were Surfs, both Loons were present in the Bay, and a mixed
group of shorebirds held Sanderling (50), Dunlin (15), Black-bellied Plovers
(2) and 1 Ruddy Turnstone. The nearby White Pond was almost full of ducks, the
half of the pond I viewed held about 70 Gadwall, 50 Hooded Mergansers, and 10
American Wigeon.
The marinas off Dandy Point Road held a soggy imm. Peregrine Falcon and a
flock of 38 more Dunlin feeding on a mud-flat. And the Eurasian Wigeon was
easily found at Ridgeway Park around 12:45 pm feeding in the grass.
I hope these birds stick around for the count, but as for the weather....
Take care,
Nick Flanders.
Newport News.
