I have looked in the downtown section of Portsmouth for the nighthawk during
the past few weeks without success. Tonight, on my third or fourth visit (can't
quite remember which), I briefly heard the nighthawk calling near the Trinity
Church, at the intersection of High and Court Streets, at approximately 9:15pm.
It called three times. I walked north on Court Street for a short distance and
then came back to High Street and then went south on Court. I heard the
nighthawk call a twice more near the main branch of the Portsmouth Library. I
did not hear the bird again, despite about another 20 minutes of searching.
