I drove over to the airport around 5:15 this evening to look for grasspipers.
I didn't see any, possibly due to a lot of runway construction. I did see a
pair of American Kestrels hanging around the runways, and a large mixed flock
of Starlings and Cowbirds. At 5:45 a flock of 24 Nighthawks flew over, going
full speed, and heading due NORTH. I watched them until they were nearly out of
binocular view when they pulled up and started to feed. That seemed to explain
their north heading, they apparently were in feeding mode before starting
their migration south. I stuck around for two more hours but did not see
anymore.
