It may have been 93 degrees yesterday but the hawks were active in the yard.
Around noon while refilling a bird bath I heard a commotion in the lilac
hedge and an explosion of sparrows and house finches flew out of the hedge.
Lots of movement in the hedge as I saw a cooper's hawk trying to extract
himself from the tangle of branches. He finally managed to get himself out
and
perched on my garden tiller while he got himself together, looking very
indignant as he rearranged his feathers before he flew away. By then of
course,
not another bird in sight.
Around 6:30 p.m. I was outside and heard a lot of noise in the field
behind the garden. There perched on the electric wire was an immature red
tail
hawk, trying to balance himself on the wire while accompanied by 17 mocking
birds perched on either side of him with others flying about his head and
generally giving him a hard time. He did not seem very worried and in about
10
minutes flew into the woods with his retinue close behind.
