Greetings to all:
Yesterday I made a quick trip to the Cotton Mill Park - Berry Hill
Plantation Trail to the BHP trailhead. I found the gate locked. Upon
checking with the BHP Estate maintenance I was informed that access to the
trail is not open to the public through the Plantation due to the fields
being lease out and that the area is open to hunters during the hunting
season.
Therefore the only access to the trail is at the Cotton Mill Park. From the
park it is a 1.5 mile hike to the duck impoundment area which isn't to far
but not a short walk either.
Sorry for the mix up but I check with a maintenance man at the plantation in
June to see if the trailhead would be open to the public when the trail was
to be opened and he said yes and then last week when I was there I asked the
maintenance crew from the Town of South Boston was it ok to be there and was
this the parking area for this end of the trail and again I got a Yes.
But it looks like everyone I asked was not in the Know and I was
misinformed.
Again the only way to enter the trail is at the Cotton Mill Park location
but for what part of the trail that I have covered in a short time it is
worth it.
I have seen tons of Indigo Buntings on my last two trips and I am sure that
if one could get an early morning start you will be rewarded with some good
birds.
