This morning I visited the woods just north of Cub Run Rec Center in
western Fairfax County. The highlight was seeing an immature Red-
Headed Woodpecker relentlessly chasing an adult RHWP. Does that
indicate this is a breeding location? Or could these be a pair of
migrating birds, which nested elsewhere?
Also, there have been many recent reports of Blue-Headed Vireos on VA-
BIRD. Is this unusual? Are they known to be a late-season migrant
around here? Or is this an exceptional “push” we’re seeing during the
past week or two?
