VA Birders,
Ken Bass called me a few nights ago to tell me that he had DICKCISSELS in
a field near his home in the Nokesville area of Prince William Co., so this
morning Pat Blyer and I drove down from Arlington to Nokesville to look for
them. We were not disappointed. Just a few minutes after we arrived there, a
DICKCISSEL landed on top of a weed stalk in the field and sat there, singing
intermittently, while we watched him in a scope for several minutes.
DIRECTIONS TO THE SITE: From Arlington or the Captial Beltway, take I-66
west to Rt. 234 Bypass, and take it south to Rt. 28. Turn right on Rt. 28
and go to Rt. 619 (Bristow Rd.). Turn left on Rt. 619, and after crossing
railroad tracks, turn right on Valley View Drive. Take Valley View to its end
at
Parkgate Rd. Turn left on Parkgate and go to bridge across creek. Cross
bridge and park; look for DICKCISSELS in weedy field on left side of road.
Since the weather was still pleasant, and one good bird deserves another,
we decided to work our way back to the George Washington Parkway and look for
a MISSISSIPPI KITE in the Fort Hunt area of Fairfax Co. We went south to
I-95, then took I-95 north to Rt. 1 at Fort Belvoir, Rt. 1 north to Rt. 235
(Mt.
Vernon Pkwy.), where we turned right, continued to Mt. Vernon, and then took
the George Washington Pkwy. north to Fort Hunt Rd. We turned left on Fort
Hunt and followed it to Carl Sandburg Middle School. We turned left into the
school entrance and parked at the first parking area there. After walking
around
for a few minutes, we spotted a MISSISSIPPI KITE, which flew over our heads.
DIRECTIONS TO THE SITE FROM THE NORTH: Take the G.W. Pkwy. south from
Alexandria, go past Belle Haven Park, and continue to Waynewood Blvd. Turn
right on Waynewood and go to its end at Fort Hunt Rd. Turn right on Fort Hunt,
and immediately left into Carl Sandburg School entrance. Continue to first
parking area, park, and look overhead for kite(s).
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
