In Maine I have often seen black ducks dive. All summer and early fall long,
not just occasionally. In fact, decades ago I was told by a Mainer they were
diving ducks, and was surprised many years later to discover they were
considered dabblers. Clearly black ducks are not mallards, but very like
mallards. Perhaps similar behavior, though I personally have never seen a
mallard dive.

The Glaucous gull at Occoquan Overlook park is showing nicely. No sign of
Iceland yet but gulls are trickling in.

Like Marshall, I also had a large flock of at least 36 Chipping Sparrows,
foraging up close in my backyard this morning--they clearly separated
themselves from the many White-throats, and fed right under my floor to
ceiling windows.

Continuing cold weather keeps bringing in the rarities.
- Stopped briefly at frozen Wilck's Lake this morning only to see a MUTE
SWAN land on the ice in the middle of the lake. Bird stayed for several
minutes resting on the ice before heading south. This species was last seen
in the region at this location in early December 2015.

- No sign of the Greater White-fronted Geese at Sandy River Reservoir, but
there are still tons of ducks. The lake is more frozen than yesterday but
plenty open water remains. Flock of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and three
COMMON GOLDENEYES were the main waterfowl highlights.

- High Bridge Trail State Park yielded the second or third regional winter
record for PALM WARBLER.

- Ended the day at Sailor's Creek Battlefield State Park with an up close
look at a brave SAVANNAH SPARROW.
