Hello All,
Another interesting morning at Dyke Marsh, which started out cold and a little
breezy. Overall numbers of birds as well as species were down from last week,
which may be partly due to the conditions. Notably, the Swamp Sparrow numbers
were lower as I was only able to find 1. Like last week, the waterfowl were
nearly absent except for the many MALLARDS with a single WOOD DUCK and a single
AMERICAN BLACK DUCK.
There were several decent birds today, including one FOX SPARROW along the main
path, a late HOUSE WREN, a flyover of AMERICAN PIPITS, *two* late? GRAY
CATBIRDS (will they winter there?), and a nice male COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
However, the bird of the day is an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER seen foraging with
Goldfinches and House Finches in one of the young Sycamore trees (with the
whitish bark and hanging fruit-nuts). The bird, clearly a Vermivora, was
olive-yellow above and lemon-yellow below (including undertail coverts), showed
a slight eye ring and had no other visible markings. Is it getting late for
this species?
LAUGHING GULLS were still present along with the RING-BILLEDs, and their
numbers are likely greater than I reported because there were many gulls I
could not quite make out due to them being backlit against the sun glaring off
the river and therefore did not get "called."
Happy Birding!
Jay
