Hello VA-Birders,
Today, 8 people participated in the Friends of Dyke Marsh bird walk, which is
held every Sunday at 8 AM starting in the picnic area. Everyone is welcome on
the weekly walks, and today it was my pleasure to host two participants from
Utah and New Mexico. It is especially enjoyable showing out-of-towners new
birds to add to their life lists.
Highlights included a NASHVILLE WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLERS, REDSTARTS, and two
WARBLING VIREOS among others in a mixed migrant flock at the bend in Haul Road.
We all had a serious case of "warbler neck" since the birds spent most of the
time in the treetops, coming down for somewhat brief but good looks.
Other birds of note were two COOPER's HAWKS (one at Hunting Creek and the other
toward the Big Gut area), a HOUSE FINCH at the mudflats, a GREEN HERON after
the bend on Haul Road, as well as a BLUE-WINGED TEAL at the creek. There was
also a huge number of LAUGHING GULLS on the River side of the flats at low tide
this morning, which I estimated to be about 1,500 birds.
One of the participants had walked ahead of the group and reported a late
ORCHARD ORIOLE, a possible LEAST BITTERN, and a SCARLET TANAGER, but the rest
of the group did not see them when we passed through the area later. Yet
another birder reported a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH toward the end of Haul Road, but
was not seen by us. A thorough search yielded no Black Ducks or Pied-billed
Grebes.
A complete list follows.
