To expand on what Peter Ross said before, we found three oriole nests (an
Orchard and two Baltimore nests) in a single Sycamore tree on the Dyke Marsh
Haul Road peninsula during this morning's walk. The nest tree is a
stand-alone Sycamore immediately to the right (west) of the little wooden
bridge. The nests are from 20 to 30 feet up with lots of activity. To add
to the fun, we also found a Warbling Vireo with nesting material. I have
never seen so much activity in a single tree (except in one case where An
Eastern Kingbird, Warbling Vireo, and Baltimore Oriole nested within 15 feet
of each other several years ago). There appeared to be minimal hostile
interaction among the nest builders today. Kinda fun to watch if you get
down there.
Actually, the entire Haul Road was active today. In all, we found 3 Orchard
Oriole nests and 3 Baltimore Oriole nests. The Orchard Oriole nest in the
Sycamore tree near the bridge was near completion while 2 of the Baltimore
nests were in the initial stages of construction. The Warbling Vireo with
nesting material disappeared before we could find the nest location.
