15 people came out for the weekly walk at Dyke Marsh sponsored by the Friends
of Dyke Marsh and free and open to all. Special thanks to Ed Eder and Larry
Cartwright for helping out today. We had excellent weather and also some
pretty good birds with 50 species tallied. A Merlin dogfighting with crows
provided us with a memorable highlight for the morning. We watched the show
from the platform at the end of the boardwalk as the Merlin sometimes chased
the crows and the crows sometimes returned the favor and pursued the Merlin. A
Belted Kingfisher caught out in the open frantically scuttled across the water
into cover. Other highlights included a Rusty Blackbird at the marina, a
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at the dogleg turn, a Winter Wren near the beginning
of Haul Road, Bald Eagles, and a variety of waterfowl on the river. A male
Canvasback was especially well seen by the group. List follows.
