Fifteen birders joined the Friends of Dyke Marsh walk on this beautiful
September morning. We found 42 species, including an early fall Yellow-rumped
Warbler in the sycamore near the marina restrooms, where it was feeding with
Red-eyed and Warbling Vireos and a Pewee. We also had an adult female Yellow
Warbler with two juveniles on the Haul Road just before the turns to the
boardwalk.
One sharp-eyed participant noticed a kettle of raptors in the sky over the
Maryland shore below the end of the Dyke Marsh boardwalk. Scope views revealed
Broad-winged Hawks as well as both vultures. Counts were hard to get because of
the distance, so conservative numbers are shown below. Other species were
generally those expected, but included a large group of Blue-winged Teal on the
shallow water at the north end of the Belle Haven picnic area.
The Dyke Marsh bird walk occurs every Sunday morning (except in December 17 and
25). Meet at 8 a.m. in the south parking lot of the Belle Haven picnic area.

Yellow-rumped Warbler 1 First fall male. Bird was foraging about 20 feet
up. Had whitish underparts with light streaking on breast and flanks and
prominent yellow patch below wings. Dull white wing-bars. Upper tail coverts
not visible. Upperparts primarily dark, including brownish auricular area
contrasting with dull whitish unstreaked throat and faint supercilium. Also
faint eye-ring.
