Fourteen birders participating in the Early Spring Birding workshop sponsored
by the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia enjoyed a beautiful morning at
Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County. We found six species of ducks including
Hooded Mergansers, Northern Shovelers, Wood Ducks, Green-winged Teal, Mallards
and Gadwall. Ospreys flew overhead while a Red-headed and Pileated Woodpecker
posed nicely for us. We also encountered a flock of around 75 Rusty Blackbirds
flying around in the area near beginning of the boardwalk. A Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker was briefly seen, while an Eastern Phoebe was well seen. A Pine
Warbler near the feeders provided a nice finale for the walk.
