On Sunday morning Apr 7, I arrived at Banister River WMA at 6:30 am to find the
morning air much colder that I thought that it might be.
Just as I opened my car door I hear GH Owls, Barred Owls and Wild Turkeys
calling. After I sorted them all out, I counted at least 3 GH Owls, 5 Barred
Owls and turkeys calling from 5 different locations. Later in the morning I
had a Barred Owl to fly across in front of me while I was looking up the marsh.
After I put on my boots and made my way into the marsh at the western end I had
an adult Bald Eagle fly by.
All in all. I ended the day with a total of 51 species seen at either the
Banister River WMA or in my backyard.
I was not able to locate any YC NH or hear any American Bitterns.
I did see a pair of Hooded Mergansers together and maybe they will breed in the
marsh again. Wood Ducks were everywhere and I saw a single Pied-billed Grebe.
A single GB Heron was on one of the two remaining nests. Most of the tall dead
trees have now fallen down and there are only a few prime places to build a
nest in the area.
