Early yesterday (Friday 8/3) evening I finally realized I was hearing
frequent Eastern Towhee calls coming from the back of our back yard. Finally
paying
attention, I found a male Towhee thrashing amongst the leaves back there, which
include a fresh crop of fallen leaves as our drought-stricken trees are
dropping them. It was doing its "zhwee" call every several seconds, and
eventually
I spotted Towhee Junior. Then it darted up and began imitating dad's back-kick
foraging behavior, but accepting frequent feedings from Papa Towhee. Most of
the time, wherever Dad went, Junior followed very close and imitated what Dad
was doing. A particular attraction was the leafy compost pile, not
surprisingly. The show went on for quite a while. We have Towhees in the
general area
year-round, but it's always fun when they turn up in the yard. Cheers,
