Finally had the Common Nighthawk flight I have been waiting for all
week. Wasn't sure if I was even going to be able to watch because a storm
came through just before I was ready to start, but it passed through quickly
and I only missed 15 minutes. By the time I finished tonight I had counted
396 nighthawks- the third highest daily count in the five years I have beebn
watching at Van Dyck Park in Fairfax City, VA. I enjoyed this count because
the nighthawks came through regularly for the 2 hours I was there and they
were widely spaced so I could get good counts, unlike other big days were
they show up en masse.
Also checked my nocturnal feeding area at Tyson's Corner. There were
25-30 nighthawks there compared to none last night. Since I was having such
good luck I made one last stop at Fair City Mall on the way home and saw 4
birds hawking insects high above the parking lot lights.
