On ABC field trip to see red knots on Eastern Shore Sunday, we happened upon a
visual feast of Clapper Rails, in clear view for extended time.
Location was road to Mispillon Light, near Slaughter Beach. The road to
Mispillon Light crosses a small bridge. We stopped by for a look from the
bridge at approx 2:45pm, low tide. We were amazed to see many Clapper Rails in
clear view, first 2-3, then 5-7 in sight at once. The clapper rails were
bathing in small tidal pools, preening, chasing each other, darting in & out of
underbrush, crossing the small stream back & forth. The rails were not at all
shy or elusive.
This setting was ideal for close-up photography and videos.
This extended viewing of Clapper Rails interacting together was enchanting and
amazing.
