This morning I drove into the Stonewall area of Appomattox, just across Rt.
460 from Concord. The acres of fields at the intersection of SR 608 and 669
(Lowell Thomas Dr) have been mowed (not plowed) and replanted so they are
very flat. I was able to find a small flock of pipits with relative ease in
the rolling fields. I counted 12 birds in the flock. There was also a
kestrel hunting in the same fields.
Other sightings in the Stonewall area were, great blue, cedar waxwings,
juncos, song sparrows, cardinals, blue jays, kingfisher and crow. My target
bird this morning was a winter wren so I drove to several go-to places for that
bird but no luck.
