The William & Mary ornithology class found one purple martin yesterday 3/26 on
the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course and seven blue-winged teal the day before
(3/25; joining the overwintering green-winged teal and gadwall) on Lake Matoaka
on the William & Mary campus. Northern rough-winged swallows have been present
at the lake for one week. This morning (3/27), a Virginia rail was calling
assertively at dawn near the boardwalk at Greensprings trail behind Jamestown
High School, and a pair of barred owls was copulating behind the school, while
two others called from distant territories. The class list stands at 159
species for the semester. Dan Cristol, Williamsburg
