This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon Naturalist
Society. This report covers the week starting Tuesday, September 19 and was
completed on Tuesday, September 26 at 6:30 p.m.
Information on noteworthy birds is presented below in taxonomic order, as
set forth in the American Ornithological Society Checklist for North and
Middle American Birds, as revised through the 58th Supplement (July 2017).
The top birds this week were WOOD STORK in DE and VA, SABINE'S GULL* in DC
and MD and WESTERN KINGBIRD in VA.
Other birds of interest this week included waterfowl, EASTERN
WHIP-POOR-WILL, AMERICAN AVOCET, shorebirds, PARASITIC JAEGER, WHITE IBIS,
hawks, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, flycatchers, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, sparrows,
warblers and DICKCISSEL.
TOP BIRDS
A WOOD STORK was seen from the Cape Henlopen Hawkwatch, Sussex Co, DE on
September 21. A WOOD STORK was seen from the Kiptopeke SP Hawkwatch,
Northampton Co, VA on September 22.
A SABINE'S GULL* was spotted on a trip to Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on
September 21.
Two WESTERN KINGBIRDS were at Sunset Beach, Northampton Co, VA on September
23.
OTHER BIRDS OF INTEREST
Several species of migratory waterfowl, including TUNDRA SWAN, NORTHERN
SHOVELER and NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen at various locations in the
reporting area during the week. Four BLACK SCOTERS continued throughout the
week at North Beach, Calvert Co, MD.
EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILLS were in the Green Ridge State Forest, Allegany Co,
MD on September 19 and 20. Another EASTERN WHIP-POOR-WILL was on Oyster
Rocks Road, Sussex Co, DE on September 24.
A single AMERICAN AVOCET was seen at Swan Creek Wetland/Cox Creek DMCF
(restricted access), Anne Arundel Co, MD on September 20, 21 and 22.
Twelve AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS were on Poplar Island, Talbot Co, MD on
September 21. More shorebirds were observed at Poplar Island on September 21
including as many as 5 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, a WILSON'S
PHALA0ROPE and 4 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE. AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS and
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were at Swan Creek Wetland/Cox Creek DMCF (restricted
access), Anne Arundel Co, MD on September 20, 21 and 22. A single AMERICAN
GOLDEN PLOVER was on Campground Road, Berlin, Worcester Co, MD on September
20.
A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen at Hurlock WWTP, Dorchester Co, MD on September
22. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was at Swan Creek Wetland/Cox Creek DMCF (restricted
access), Anne Arundel Co, MD on September 20, 21 and 22. A MARBLED GODWIT
was seen on Skimmer Island, Worcester Co, MD on September 24. Two to six
BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were seen at the Shiloh Church Turf Farm,
Dorchester Co, MD on September 23 and 26.
Single PARASITIC JAEGERS were seen from the CBBT, Thimble Island, Virginia
Beach, VA on September 19; Kerr Lake, VA on September 20 and Back Bay NWR,
Virginia Beach, VA on September 23.
A WHITE IBIS was seen at Deal Island, Somerset Co, MD on September 22.
A MISSISSIPPI KITE was seen September 20 at Elk Neck SP, Cecil Co, MD.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen from the Mendota Fire Tower Hawkwatch, Russell
Co, VA on September 20. Another NORTHERN GOSHAWK was reported from the
Rockfish Gap Hawkwatch, Augusta Co, VA on September 21.
Numerous BROAD-WINGED HAWKS flew over the various hawk watches this past
week. The Rockfish Gap Hawkwatch near Waynesboro, VA had recorded 22,000 by
September 24.
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS was seen in several venues including: Back Bay
NWR, Virginia Beach, VA on September 23 and 24; Jefferson Park Trail,
Charlottesville, VA on September 23; and Sunset Beach, Northampton Co, VA on
September 23.
An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was at the Occoquan Bay NWR, Prince William Co, MD
on September 22. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was seen at the Beltsville
Agriculture Research Center (BARC), Prince George's Co, MD on September 26.
YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were reported from several places
including: Sunset Beach, Northampton Co, VA on September 21 and Huntley
Meadows Park, Fairfax Co, VA on September 23.
A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was seen September 21 at Rock Creek Park, DC and
another was at Back Bay NWR, Virginia Beach, VA on the same day. A
PHILADELPHIA VIREO was at Cromwell Valley Park, Baltimore Co, MD on
September 22. A PHILADELPHIA VIREO was at the Blue Ridge Center, Loudoun Co,
VA on September 23. Another PHILADELPHIA VIREO was at Wheaton Regional Park,
Montgomery Co, MD on September 24.
All manner of THRUSHES were reported throughout the reporting area during
the week.
A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was at the CBBT, Thimble Island, Virginia Beach, VA
on September 21 and at Little Island Park, also Virginia Beach on September
23. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was on Assateague Island Worcester Co, MD on
September 23. Two to three CLAY-COLORED SPARROWS were at Ocean City, Sunset
Park, Worcester Co, MD on September 22, 23 and 24.
Migrant warblers were seen at many locations during the week. A
GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was at Oregon Ridge Park, Baltimore Co, MD on
September 20, 21, 23 and 24. Another GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER visited a yard in
Woodbine, Carroll Co, MD on September 21. Double digit species counts at
warbler hot spots included: 16 warbler species at Leesylvania SP, Prince
William Co, VA on September 25 including CHESTNUT-SIDED, CAPE MAY,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BLACKBURNIAN and BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS; 14 species at
Rock Creek Park, DC on September 23 including TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE,
CHESTNUT-SIDED, CAPE MAY, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACKBURNIAN, BAY-BREASTED
AND BLACKPOLL WARBLES;
13 warbler species at Wheaton Regional Park, Montgomery Co, MD on September
25 including TENNESSEE, NASHVILLE, CHESTNUT-SIDED, , BLACK-THROATED BLUE,
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BAY-BREASTED and BLACKPOLL;
10 species on the Blue Ridge Parkway, VA on September 19 including
TENNESSEE, CHESTNUT-SIDED, CAPE MAY, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK-THROATED
GREEN and BLACKPOLL WARBLERS; 10 species at Oregon Ridge Park, Baltimore Co,
MD on September 20 including the GOLDEN-WINGED mentioned above, plus
BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BAY-BREASTED and BLACKPOLL WARBLERS; 10 species on the
Blue Ridge Parkway near Crozet, VA on September 22 including TENNESSEE,
CAPE MAY, BLACK-THROATED BLUE, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BAY-BREASTED, and
BLACKPOLL WARBLERS; and 10 warbler species at Occoquan Bay NWR on September
on September 22 including BLACKBURNIAN, MOURNING and YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. A
WILSON'S WARBLER visited a Bethesda yard, Montgomery Co, MD on September 20.
A DICKCISSEL was seen at Big Water Farm (private), Queen Anne's Co, MD on
September 20.
