Subject: Dyke Marsh Trip, Fairfax County, 7/3/05
The regular Dyke Marsh trip took place today with pleasant temperatures and
humidity, partly cloudy skies & a breeze off of the Potomac. Before the walk
began, I saw two Warbling Vireos along the river (thanks to Larry Cartwright);
unfortunately, we were unable to relocate them later. We did, however, have
great views of both species of orioles feeding young which had already left the
nest. We also had several Common Yellowthroats pop up right in front of us.
We had less luck with the Marsh Wrens -- we heard many but saw none. After the
walk, I and several other participants went upstream to Stone Bridge, where we
able to see a hen Wood Duck with 4 young in tow, as well as a couple of
Laughing Gulls among the crowd of Ring-bills. Complete list follows below
(Stone Bridge birds in parenthesis).
