Subject: Lincoln's Sparrows in SW Virginia
On Friday, 16 October, I found at least three Lincoln's Sparrows at the
Blacksburg Heritage Wildlife Area. There were numerous other sparrow
species present including Song, White-crowned, White-throated, Swamp, Field,
and Chipping.
There was a yellow phase Palm Warbler, also.
On Saturday, 17 October, a New River Valley Bird Club field trip to Rural
Retreat Lake and the Minnick farm in Wythe County found three more Lincoln's
Sparrows at the Minnick farm (near Speedwell, south of Wytheville) We also
had a small group of late Black-throated Green Warblers (4-5) at the farm
and a Greater Yellowlegs at Rural Retreat Lake.
Lincoln's Sparrows come through in fairly good numbers in October in western
Virginia. However, they push through in a very brief time window. It takes
some vigilance and a little luck to find them. We were lucky last weekend.
