Hello, birders.
Visited Elklick Woodlands in Centreville (Fairfax Co.) on Saturday. Variety
was a little low - only Blackpoll Warbler, Common Yellowthroat and
Yellow-rumped Warbler represented the wood warbler clan.
Sparrows - E. Towhee, Chipping, Field, Savannah (first of season), Song, Swamp
(first of season), White-throated (first of season).
Both kinglets were present. I enjoyed close looks at low foraging
Golden-crowned in Virginia Pines.
A small falcon zipped by and seemed to fly into a stand of pines but I didn't
see it again.
Numerous Robins were in evidence.
I heard a COMMON RAVEN and saw a skittish WILD TURKEY running into the woods.
On Sunday a friend and I visited Occoquan Bay NWR in Woodbridge (Prince William
Co.) Numerous crows of both species were present. Only 3 warbler species
and 4 sparrow species.
A big flock of Goldfinches were in the weedy fields on both sides of the
entrance road.
A few male Indigo Buntings and a female Scarlet Tanager were nice to see and
see pretty well. The last weekend for them.
Lots of Can. Geese, R.b. Gulls and D.c. Cormorants on the bay.
Best bird was a Ruby-throated (presumed) Hummingbird that my friend and another
birder saw.
