Hi- I moved to Virginia 3 months ago. I am on Holiday Lake in Cross Junction.
Cross Junction is in northwest Virginia, northwest of Winchester.
On July 4th, we had a boat parade, but while we were idling in
one of the fingers off the lake, only kiyaks and row boats are in the deeper
end of the fingers, we spotted a loon. I did not have bins with me, so could
not
determine more. But it has been seen by the fisherman, who hang out in those
quiet inlets.
We went for a slow cruise tonight and swimming, and the
loon was there. I brought my camera with a 300mm lens and took pictures of it.
It was not shy, that is to say, it did not take off, like ducks would. I hope
the pictures will be ok, I will get them developed tomorrow. The markings are
that of a Common Loon female.
This is a gated community, and if it needs to be confirmed, then I
would have to be contacted. My neighbors have a boat, and I would be able to go
out with someone to confirm it. There were 4 other people on board with me. We
also saw an Osprey, and Black Ducks as well as mallards.
