From 11:30 to 1pm I checked out the beginning of the Bridle Trail and theShearman's Mill Trail. Overall it was pretty slow. No Say's Phoebe.
Highlights were a PALM WARBLER along the Bridle Trail, a FOX SPARROW along
the Shearman's Mill Trail. 7 sparrow species total, including WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROW.
I stopped by Blandy for a few minutes on the way back and immediately found
the LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE after I parked at the meteorological tower on the
north side of the loop. It was actively hunting straight across the field
along the last rise you can see (a good distance, needed my scope without
walking). Also, the RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES were extremely vocal and active
in the cedars near the main parking lot. A BALD EAGLE flew over at high
altitude shortly before I left.

I thought many of you might be interested in the article in the
following link, especially those who followed the link in the earlier
post that showed the area as it currently is, and also those who were
recently treated to the sighting of the Say's Phoebe.
It seems that it's always too good to be true to have such a jewel right
in the midst of such heavy development.

I have seen several reports of Evening Grosbeaks
throughout the region, and my first thought was this was that species, but
after
closer inspection I realized it was not an Evening Grosbeak but was
smaller, and after more research I found this is to be a EUROPEAN
GREENFINCH !
This bird visited my feeders many times today! I contacted 2 Avian Doctors
in the area & they said they were not aware of any breeders in our area ,
nor have they seen this species in their offices, and advised me the
probability of this being a wild naturally occurring species was more likely
than
an escaped bird. I know that this bird has been bred in captivity in the
United States, but not commonly & the only report of a naturally occurring
species ever found in North America was documented in Quebec in April.2012 by
the ABA!
After Hurricane Sandy and the Northeaster that just
came through I believe this to be a wild bird from Europe! If there are any
breeders in the area that have them & have escaped please respond.! This
could very well be the first American record of this species!.
Provided this bird sticks around, anyone & everyone
is more than welcome to come and see it !

My out-of-town birding friend and I birded Blandy Farm part of the day
Friday. We did see the Shrike, twice, from two different locations, at
two different times.
Initially, we found it in the field by RT.50, looking from RT.50, by the
private lane across the road. It was sitting on a white stake and flying
around, hunting. Later in the afternoon, we found it on a small tree/bush,
hunting, by looking down the mowed lane by the weather station in the field
from the loop road. . Nice looks both times.
We also found lots of very vocal Red-breasted nuthatches, a few female
Purple Finches, and an assortment of sparrows.
Of most interest, we had a short look at a very unusual soaring raptor (it
appeared by shape and size to probably be a Red-tailed hawk),that was
COMPLETELY WHITE. We only saw it for two or three minutes as it circled
and gained altitude. I've never seen such a completely white bird before in
my life . It was really stunning.
I will post more on it later after I do some more research.
