VA Birders,
Not wanting to get caught up in holiday traffic, I spent this morning at
Fort Smith Park here in Arlington. In just over 3 hours, I counted 31 species
of birds, including 14 that came to our Bird Stream. Most notable among
those 14 were Eastern Phoebe, Red-eyed Vireo, and Orchard Oriole. Another
bird,
an immature Baltimore Oriole, seemed to be checking out the stream but didn't
come down while I was there. The morning's list also included 2 Killdeer
flying over, a Great Crested Flycatcher (which was still calling), and an
Eastern
Kingbird which came out of nowhere to chase a Red-shouldered Hawk. The hawk,
an immature, had one leg hanging down, which I suspect may have been injured.
