VA BIRDers,
Special thanks to Roger for this report. - Kurt
Thirteen birding enthusiasts gathered on the bright, clear, calm and
initially cool morning of 13 July 2003 for the regular 8 a.m. Friends of Dyke
Marsh
Sunday bird walk. High tide was at it's peak just as the walk started.
A highlight of the jaunt was a nesting Hummingbird discovered about 100'
north of the dog-leg on Haul Road and located on a small maple branch some 25'
directly above the pathway. The movement of the parent bird brought our
attention
to the nest.
Of interest were the adult and juvenile Warbling Vireos seen in the copse at
the south end of the pic-nic area.
Many Blue-grey Gnat Catchers were seen along Haul Road seemingly in family
groups.
No Baltimore Orioles were evident. One Orchard Oriole male was seen
fleetingly in the picnic area and possibly one heard near the board walk -
though there
was some discussion if it was not a House Finch calling.
